Meghalaya is a place where you can witness a lot of caves. This northeast State comprise a large number of caves which are situated in the Jaintia, Khasi Hills and Garo Hills districts in the Indian state of Meghalaya, and are amongst the longest caves in the world. Of the ten longest and deepest caves in India, the first nine are in Meghalaya, while the tenth is in Mizoram.

The longest cave you can find in Meghalaya is the Krem Liat Prah in the Jaintia Hills. The word “Krem” means cave in the local Khasi language of Meghalaya.

The exploration of the Caves of Meghalaya is currently undertaken for both scientific and recreational pursuits by tourists visiting the places and there are still many unexplored and partially explored caves in the state. The annual caving expeditions organized by Meghalaya Adventurers Association (MAA) are known as “Caving in the Abode of the Clouds Project”. Krem Liat Prah – Situated in the Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya, this is a Limestone cave in the Shnongrim Ridge. Huge trunk passage called the Aircraft Hangar are there in it. This is also the longest cave in the Indian Subcontinent.

Krem KotSati – The Krem KotSati cave is in Lumshnong village, Jaintia Hills and is also a Limestone cave as the one above. This cave has 24 entrances, both horizontal and vertical. For those looking to enter the caves they need to swim to enter the caves.

Krem Tyngheng – The Krem Tyngheng cave is in the Jaintia Hills and is a Limestone cave near the Sammasi village. The cave has quite many side passages and is a very impressive cave.

Krem UmthlooSynrang Labbit – The Krem Umthloo-Synrang Labbit caves are in the Chiehruphi village on the NH 44 national highway in the Jaintia Hills These are Limestone caves and have a dendritic pattern in the stream cave passage. Many entrances are found in the cave. The “Titanic Hall” chamber with coloured formations in orange, red, black, grey, blue, green and whitecan be seen here in this cave.

Krem Chympe – The Krem Chympe caves can be seen when going from the village of Khaddum to Sielkan in the Jaintia Hills. This is also a Limestone cave and a river cave. The caves are of 6–8 metres height. Expect to see a large colony of bats while visiting the cave.

Krem Shrieh – The Krem Shrieh cave is in the Jaintia Hills and like the others is a Limestone cave. One can see a very large vertical entrance shaft of 97 metres or of 318 feet depth which leads to fine stream passage and plethora of high fossil passages.

Krem Mawmluh – The Krem Mawmluh cave in the Khasi Hills are Limestone filled caves with water. The cave ceiling is around 2.5 feet with formations of stalactite, stalagmite, and rock fossils. Also one can expect to see a large number of bats in the save. A speleothem in Mawmluh cave indicates a dramatic worldwide climate event around 2250 BC, and has been selected by the International Commission on Stratigraphy as the boundary stratotype of the Meghalayan stage/age of the late Holocene.

Krem Lymput – The Krem Lymput cave is in the Nongjri village in the Khasi Hills. This is a Limestone cave with a small entrance which leads to 1 kilometre of) passageway called ‘Way to Heaven,” and further to a Mughal Room (more than 25 metres wide, 25 metres (82 ft) high, and 75 metres or 246 ft long.

Siju Cave – The Siju cave is in the Siju village in Garo Hills. This is a Limestone cave. It is in the vertical side of the Simsang River. Also known as “bat cave”. Has attractive stalagmites and stalactites. It has a Di’s chamber. The cave has been extensively researched and is well known.

Krem Synrang Ngap – The Krem Synrang Ngap cave is in the Jaintia Hills and is a Limestone cave. The caves lead to an inlet tunnel converging to a smaller section of passage beyond which are potholed galleries with cave pearl-like sandstone pebbles in the floor.
